Collective Nouns Bingo

ESL Collective Nouns Worksheet and Game - Vocabulary: Matching, Gap-fill - Group Work - Upper-intermediate (B2) - 30 minutes

In this set of fun collective noun activities, students complete a worksheet to practice collective nouns and then use the nouns in a game of bingo. Students begin by matching words to one of six collective nouns. Next, students complete a set of phrases with collective nouns. Afterwards, students practice the collective nouns by playing a game or games of bingo. In groups, one student takes on the role of the bingo caller and the other students take a bingo card each. The bingo caller picks up a card and reads out the collective noun to the group, e.g. flock. If the collective noun corresponds to a word on a student's bingo card, the student writes the collective noun in the space (e.g. a flock of birds) and crosses out the square. The first student to correctly cross off all 12 squares wins. Students can play several rounds if need be, giving other students the chance to be the bingo caller.

Collective Quiz

ESL Collective Nouns Game - Vocabulary: Quiz, Guessing, Matching - Group Work - Upper-intermediate (B2) - 25 minutes

In this free collective nouns game, students take part in a quiz where they race to guess collective nouns related to animals, people and things. In the game, students play a jeopardy-style quiz game where they guess collective nouns from descriptions. Start by choosing a square to begin the game, e.g. animals 100. Read the description of the noun, e.g. 'This collective noun is used to describe a group of wolves'. The first student to say the correct collective noun wins that square for their team and the number of points for that square. Students should respond in sentence form, e.g. 'The collective noun for wolves is a pack.' The winning team then chooses the next square. However, any team can try to guess the collective noun. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. As a variation, when a student answers correctly, the winning team can double their points by giving another example using the same collective noun, e.g. a pack of cards.

High Rollers

ESL Collective Nouns Board Game - Vocabulary and Speaking: Forming Sentences and Questions from Prompts - Group Work - Upper-intermediate (B2) - 25 minutes

In this engaging collective nouns board game, students practice using collective nouns correctly in positive sentences, negative sentences, and questions. If a student rolls a one or four, they make a positive sentence with the collective noun in the square. If they roll a two or five, they make a negative sentence. If they roll a three or six, the student makes a question with the collective noun and asks it to a group member. Players take it in turns to roll the dice and move their counter along the board. When a player lands on a collective noun square, they make a positive sentence, a negative sentence, or a question that appropriately uses the collective noun. For example, if a player rolls a one and lands on the collective noun 'class', they might say 'Our class has students from many different countries'. If the player makes a suitable sentence or question, they stay on the square. If not, the player goes back two spaces. The first player to reach the finish wins the game.
